Epoch Counseling Center offers a wide array of outpatient services to meet the various needs of the communities that we serve. Our programs focus on the various issues and distinctive concerns that go along with substance abuse and addiction and mental health. We believe in treating the person as a whole. We understand that each client comes to us with a unique set of concerns, which may include legal problems, mental health concerns, relationship issues, and employment problems. We encourage our clients to honestly examine the impact that their substance use has had on all areas of their lives and to establish short and long term goals regarding future use of alcohol and other drugs. For clients who also present with mental health disorders, we provide mental health counseling on-site and collaborate with physicians for medication management.
The staff of Epoch Counseling Center acknowledges that our clients will most likely experience a wide range of emotions and reactions to participating in substance abuse treatment. We strive to meet each client where they are in their process of change in order to provide quality services and promote overall wellness. Our counselors employ a variety of clinical interventions and techniques which are evidence-based and promote growth and wellness in our clients. These include but are not limited to drug and alcohol education, motivational interviewing, mindfulness training, relapse prevention, and other cognitive-behavioral techniques.
Any adult or adolescent who is abusing alcohol and/or other drugs or is at risk is eligible for our services. Each of our centers is capable of working with clients who also have mental health conditions. Support is also available for parents and other family members to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to cope with the substance abusing person. In addition to the various services we provide at Epoch Counseling Center, it is our intention to provide our clients and their families with a high level of service and actively assist them in making connections to community resources that will meet needs that we cannot.
The staff of Epoch Counseling Center is available and eager to work with you and help guide you to a better and more fulfilling life. However, your success ultimately depends on the time and energy you invest in yourself.
Anyone interested in our services may call or visit one of our four locations to complete a screening, where a staff member will speak with the individual about his/her needs and background and schedule an appointment. Please review the FAQs for more information. Information disclosed to Epoch staff will remain confidential, as required by law. An information release form must be signed if the client would like this information released to any person or agency other than Epoch Counseling Center. Please see the Confidentiality section for more detailed information about client privacy.
Epoch Counseling Center offers both intake assessments and drug/alcohol evaluations. Although they are somewhat similar, there are some important differences, so it is helpful for clients to understand which service they need.
If you choose to enroll in treatment, your first clinical session will be an intake assessment, which will be one- on-one with a counselor. This is a fairly structured session during which the counselor will gather information and background in various areas of your life in order to assess your needs and accurately place you in the appropriate treatment program and with a counselor that can best address your concerns. The counselor who you see for intake may or may not be your counselor for the duration of your treatment at Epoch. The intake session usually lasts anywhere from one to two hours. After your intake assessment session, you will be assigned to a counselor and scheduled for your first group or individual session.
If you would like or are required only to complete an assessment to find out if you need treatment, you would complete an evaluation, which also will be one-on-one with a counselor. An evaluation is similar to an intake in structure and duration. The counselor will gather information and background in various areas of your life in order to assess your needs and determine your level of risk and need for treatment. After the evaluation is completed, a recommendation is then made in the form of a formal letter and can be submitted to any agency at your request, given that an appropriate consent for the release of information form is signed by you. If you have an evaluation and are recommended for treatment, you may enter treatment within 30 days of the intake. If you choose to enroll in treatment after 30 days, you will need to complete an intake assessment.
Epoch Counseling Center is Maryland State certified for Level 0.5 early intervention services. We currently offer a DUI/DWI Education program at our Lansdowne and Dundalk locations. The program provides information related to Maryland DUI/DWI laws, Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC), and other information about the risks of alcohol. Clients are also provided with interventions designed to prevent drinking and driving behavior in the future. To successfully complete the program, clients must attend an initial intake, 6 group sessions, and a final exit interview. Please see the Forms section for detailed DUI/DWI Program Guidelines. There are standard fees for each session of this program, please see the Fees & Insurance section for specific fee information.
Epoch Counseling Center is Maryland State certified for Level I outpatient services (also referred to as “traditional outpatient”). We offer outpatient (OP) treatment for adults (ages 18 and up) and adolescents (ages 12 -17) at all four of our locations. The following services are offered with the outpatient program:
Specific groups are offered for women, men, young adults (18-25), adolescents, and clients with co-occurring disorders. Clients participating in the OP program are seen at least once weekly, but may be seen for additional individual, group, and/or couples/family sessions. If a client needs a more intensive treatment program in order to be successful in their recovery, they may enroll in the intensive outpatient program. Please see the Forms section for detailed Program Guidelines.
Epoch Counseling Center is Maryland State certified for Level II.1 intensive outpatient services. We offer intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment for adults (ages 18 and up) at all four of our locations and for adolescents (ages 12-17) at our Catonsville and Essex locations. The following services are offered with the intensive outpatient program:
Because the IOP program is more intensive than our regular outpatient program, clients are seen several days a week, usually 3 hours per day, totaling a minimum 9 hours a week. The IOP program is usually shorter in duration that the outpatient program and upon completion of the IOP phase of treatment, clients are stepped down to the basic OP program. Please see the Forms section for detailed Program Guidelines.
The following are general times IOP services are offered at each location:
Adult IOP - Evenings

In addition to outpatient and intensive outpatient services, clients may be eligible for our buprenorphine maintenance program. Buprenorphine (Suboxone) is used in the treatment of opiate dependence and has been shown to be successful in preventing relapse, particularly in conjunction with counseling services. This is a fully funded program intended to provide somewhat short term (<6 months) or “bridge” services for uninsured clients in Baltimore County. There are limited slots for the program. However, if a client is in need of these services and a slot is not available, they may begin counseling at Epoch and be added to the waiting list. Due to the nature of the program and limited space availability, the program requires a strong commitment, including attending several counseling sessions per week in addition to appointments with the doctor.
Our Catonsville office also provides access to buprenorphine maintenance services on a self-pay basis. These services are provided by a contractual physician several days each week. It is expected that self-pay patients will also participate in counseling services.
Many people who suffer from substance abuse problems (about 50%) also struggle with co-occurring mental health issues, most commonly depression, anxiety, or other addictions. It is important to understand and address these concerns. We strongly encourage clients who may be experiencing mental health symptoms or have been diagnosed with a co-occurring mental health condition to complete a mental health assessment and participate in concurrent treatment with a therapist and/or psychiatrist. Each of our offices has staff available to provide individual mental health counseling and we have groups specifically for those struggling with both mental health and substance abuse issues. In addition, we offer on-site psychiatric care for our uninsured adult clients. If the services we provide do not meet a client’s mental health needs, our staff can help to facilitate a referral to an appropriate community provider.
Many clients who experience substance abuse issues also have difficulty managing their anger. Substance use frequently alters brain chemistry which may affect one’s ability to stay calm and manage situations appropriately when angry. Epoch offers a comprehensive anger management program that emphasizes cognitive restructuring, personal responsibility and option recognition to effect more positive resolution and outcomes for the client. Upon completion of the program the client is given a letter and certificate attesting to their regular attendance and participation as well as the successful passing of the comprehensive examination. Completion of the Epoch anger management program satisfies probation requirements and may assist the client in avoiding further legal charges or interpersonal struggles.
Epoch Counseling Center understands the importance of family support in our clients’ recovery as well as the unique struggles family and friends of substance abusing individuals face. As such, we encourage clients to develop a strong support network and involve them in their recovery process. Support for and involvement of family members and loved ones of clients in our program is available at each of our four locations. We offer free educational information in our waiting rooms and can provide additional resources or referrals for additional information or services upon request. Also, family and/or couples counseling sessions are offered as part of the client’s treatment. In addition, as part of our intensive outpatient program we have family support and educational services. For more information about the family services available, please contact the location nearest you.
In addition, you may find support and guidance at the following support group meetings:
Each Epoch Counseling Center location provides drug screening, which is used to determine the presence or absence of various drugs or alcohol in the body. This may include urinalysis, saliva or breathalyzer testing. These tests are performed regularly on all of our active clients as part of each treatment program and are always administered at intake assessments and evaluation sessions. In addition, we offer walk-in drug screening upon request. Availability of walk-in drug screening varies, so please contact the center closest to you for available times. Fees for drug screening vary based on the type of test, insurance coverage, and referral source.
