Research Interests

Dr. Carswell has knowledge and experience regarding community and environmental factors and their relationship to the incidence and prevalence of youth and adult involvement in health-compromising behaviors in urban communities. He has assisted in the development and evaluation of intervention programs aimed at preventing and/or reducing the involvement of urban African American youth in risky behaviors and delinquent activities. He has also conducted grant reviews for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and manuscript reviews for prominent journals. Currently, he is a recipient of a NIH K Award (K99/R00), funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), that examines the extent to which specific risk and protective factors predict both perceptions of HIV risk and participation in risky sexual behaviors among African American youth. In addition, he is a two-time recipient of a NIH Health Disparities Research Loan Repayment Award and is a former recipient of a NIH Diversity Fellowship Award.

In his position as Vice President, and in collaboration with the President, Medical Director, and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Carswell is responsible for the oversight and management of FRI. He assists in the development of short and long-term strategic plans, policies, and procedures to improve FRI’s research, clinical, and grants management infrastructure.
