Research Interests

Dr. Carswell has knowledge and experience regarding community and environmental factors and their relationship to the incidence and prevalence of youth and adult involvement in health-compromising behaviors in urban communities.  He has assisted in the development and evaluation of preventive intervention programs aimed at preventing and/or reducing the involvement of urban African American youth in risky behaviors and delinquent activities.  Dr. Carswell is a recent recipient of a NIH K Award (K99/R00) that examines the extent to which specific risk and protective factors predict both perceptions of HIV risk and participation in risky sexual behaviors among high-risk African American youth.  In addition, he is a recent recipient of a NIH Health Disparities Research Loan Repayment Award and a former recipient of a NIH Minority Investigator Fellowship Award.
