Research Interests

Dr. Schwartz, FRI’s Medical Director, is a psychiatrist and former Director of the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His research interests include entry and engagement in drug abuse treatment, pharmacotherapy of opioid dependence, and screening and brief intervention for drug misuse in primary care settings. He is Principal Investigator of two National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded clinical trials examining: (1) a novel approach to re-engineering the clinical structure of methadone treatment as compared to standard treatment delivery; and, (2) Interim Methadone and Patient Navigation in Jail. Dr. Schwartz is the Co-Principal Investigator (with Dr. Maxine Stitzer from Johns Hopkins University) on the Mid-Atlantic Node of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network. He has led other NIDA-funded research studies on computerized brief intervention for drug misuse in primary care, screening for alcohol, tobacco, and drug misuse among adult and adolescent primary care patients, entry and engagement in methadone treatment, and interim methadone treatment for opioid dependent individuals on program waiting lists.
