Brief Biography
Dr. Carswell has knowledge and experience
regarding community and environmental factors and their
relationship to the incidence and prevalence of youth and adult
involvement in health-compromising behaviors in urban
communities. He has assisted in the development and evaluation
of preventive intervention programs aimed at preventing and/or
reducing the involvement of urban African American youth in
risky behaviors and delinquent activities. He has also
initiated, developed, and submitted methodologically rigorous
grant applications for independent research, published in
peer-reviewed journals, presented at scientific conferences,
conducted NIH grant reviews and peer reviews for journals, and
collaborated with other investigators on research studies.
Currently, he is a recipient of a NIH K Award (K99/R00), funded
by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities
(NCMHD), that examines the extent to which specific risk and
protective factors predict both perceptions of HIV risk and
participation in risky sexual behaviors among high-risk African
American youth. In addition, he is a two-time recipient of a NIH
Health Disparities Research Loan Repayment Award (also funded by
NCMHD) and he is a former recipient of a NIH Minority
Investigator Fellowship Award.
In his position as Vice President, and in collaboration with the
President, Chief Operating Officer, and Medical Director, Dr.
Carswell is responsible for the oversight and management of FRI.
He assists in the development of short and long-term strategic
plans, proposes and promotes actions necessary to improve FRI
infrastructure development to support research activities, and
interfaces with FRI East and West Coast investigators and
clinical staff.
